Patton met Monty on an airfield near Syracuse to discuss latter half of the Sicilian campaign. They carved up the island between them using a map on the bonnet of Monty's staff car. Alexander, their boss, and Eisenhower's Chief of Staff, Maj Gen Walter Bedell Smith, arrived later. Alexander was displeased that Monty and Patton had laready agreed their future strategy before he joined the meeting.
