The results of the bombing of Cassino led to almost insurmountable difficulties for the New Zealand armour trying to support the infantry. Great areas of rubble barred all routes through the town. Attempts by engineers with bulldozers to try to clear routes forward always brought down immediate German retaliatory fire.
