Tank landing ships unloading stores on to the quayside in the harbour at Anzio. The relatively narrow depth of the Allied lodgement meant that the town was within the range of German heavy-calibre artillery, most especially from the large railway gun, 'Anzio Annie' some 15 miles inland.
