General Sir Harold Alexander Allied Fifteenth Army Group. Alexander had seen action in the First World War with the Irish Guards and served in all the major theatres in the Second World War, bar North-West Europe. He had a fine combat record and was well respected by most of his contemporaries. His diplomatic ability enabled him to work effectively with his subordinates from a variety of nationalities.
