During the Battle of Arnhem, Hotel Schoonoord was used as an emergency hospital. However, there were so many injured that soldiers who had to recover were quickly taken to other buildings. Hotel Vreewijk, across the street, became such a shelter. At certain times there were as many as a hundred patients in Hotel Vreewijk. These were often soldiers who had undergone surgery and who still needed further care. Medical care in Hotel Vreewijk was arranged during these days by Corporal Harold Coulding of 16th Parachute Field Ambulance. Like Hotel Schoonoord, Hotel Vreewijk was in the line of fire for most of the battle and was constantly exposed to shelling. The photo was taken after the battle in the perimeter by the German military propaganda photographer
