An infantryman takes cover during the bombardment of Goch. The attack by the 51st Highland Division from the south of Goch caught the Germans by surprise. The German commandant Colonel Mutessek had moved the bulk of his troops over the River Niers within the town to counter the attack to the north by 15th Scottish Division.
